Earl was one of the most fun-loving and cheerful guys I've ever known.  He never was "down" and he always seemed to bring a smile or a laugh to anyone within earshot.   I'll never forget Senior Follies when Earl taught me to sing a song about a banker (who knew that I would become a banker later in life!!)......the lyrics were kind of "strange", but the chorus went something like this.  "If you're ever needing money, go to Hal, GO TO HAL"!!!!

We may miss seeing our friend, Earl in this physical life;  but we will never forget him, and we know that in heaven, Earl is explaining to Mr. Webb how that beat up car ended up in the Principal's parking space one day!  And Mr. Webb is "smiling"!!

Although I did not see Earl often once I left Abilene, he was frequently in my thoughts. It was always great to catch up at our Abilene High School reunions. Earl and I shared many memorable days at the VFW bowling lanes.  He was always ready for a good pot game (we could only aford 50 cent bets). We also spent many carefree nights chasing each other across open and not so open fields in our VW bugs. Earl enlisted my assistance in blocking the school entrance with over 100 tractor tires on senior skit day (the truth is now revealed). As payback, he helped move me to Austin to start my studies at UT during the summer of 71----what great times! He was well liked by everyone.

My favorite Earl memory, had to be the AWFUL home made apple wine.  Oh my, and getting the jeeper stuck, we had to get out and lift it off the dirt pile.  I think he is the reason I thought my MG Midget could go anywhere and climb any mountain!

Earl and I went to senior prom together. We spent the rest of the evening stuck in the mud in his VW, because that was just Earl, and missed the dance.

We had a lot of fun, we were buddies through high School. I only learned he passed recently,  when his father's obituary appeared. We had lots of fun.

I didn't know Earl very well. Wasn't he the guy that sang "Blowin' in the Wind" at Senior Follies? Wasn't he the guy that drove to school in an old mail deliver van? If it is the guy of my rusty memory, he is one of two guys in our class that stand out in my memory for their "uniqueness". In a generation where we all seemed to be conforming to a standard of "nonconformity", Early was not afraid to be himself. I respect that, and thus respect Earl, his memory and example to me.
